Jaw Pain and Headaches: How They Connect

Jaw pain, clicking or tightness can sometimes occur alongside headaches, neck pain or facial discomfort. Clenching, jaw movement and other individual factors may also be relevant to your symptoms. At Living Health Group, we assess your jaw alongside relevant movement and function through the neck and surrounding areas before developing an individualised management plan based on your needs and goals.

Understanding the Connection Between Jaw Pain and Headaches

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) sits just in front of the ear and is involved in movements such as chewing, speaking and opening or closing the mouth. The muscles and joints around the jaw also work closely with structures in the neck and surrounding areas.

For some people, jaw pain or tension may occur alongside headaches, neck discomfort or facial pain. Habits such as clenching or grinding the teeth may also be relevant, although the factors contributing to these symptoms can vary from person to person.

Our assessment considers your jaw movement and function alongside relevant areas such as the neck, as well as activities or habits that may be contributing to your symptoms. This helps us develop a management plan based on your individual presentation rather than assuming there is a single cause.

Common Signs and Symptoms

  • Clicking, catching or discomfort around the jaw or in front of the ear
  • Jaw tightness or fatigue, particularly with chewing or on waking
  • Headaches or discomfort around the temples, head or neck
  • Tightness or discomfort through the jaw, face or temple area

Jaw pain and headaches can have a number of different causes, so an assessment can help determine what may be contributing to your symptoms and guide an appropriate management plan.

How We Approach Jaw Pain

Your care starts with understanding your symptoms, how your jaw is affecting you and the factors that may be contributing. From there, we develop an individualised management plan based on your assessment, needs and goals.

1. Assess

We assess how your jaw moves and functions, alongside relevant muscles and movement through the jaw, neck and surrounding areas. We also consider activities or habits that may be relevant to your symptoms.

2. Treat

Depending on your presentation, management may include gentle hands-on treatment through the jaw, neck and surrounding muscles, alongside strategies to help manage your symptoms.

3. Build

Jaw and neck exercises, movement strategies and awareness around habits such as clenching may be incorporated into your plan where appropriate.

4. Co-care

Where dental factors, teeth grinding or other concerns may be relevant, we may recommend review by your dentist or another healthcare practitioner. With your consent, we can work alongside them as part of your broader management plan.

Common questions

Do I need a mouthguard or splint?
A mouthguard or splint may be appropriate for some people, particularly where teeth grinding or other dental factors are involved. These are best assessed by your dentist. Where appropriate, we can recommend dental review and work alongside your dentist as part of your care.
Can neck problems contribute to headaches?
The neck can be one factor associated with some types of headache. When relevant, we assess your neck alongside your jaw and consider how your symptoms, movement and function may be related. Headaches can have many different causes, so we don’t assume the jaw or neck is always responsible.
Why do my symptoms get worse at my desk?
Some people notice more jaw, neck or headache symptoms during prolonged desk work. Factors such as sustained positions, reduced movement or clenching may be relevant. We consider your individual work habits and symptoms and, where appropriate, may suggest movement or practical strategies to help you manage them.
